How do blackout shades work? Room darkening or blackout shades use heavy fabrics that don’t let in light. They don’t need to be dark-colored, but they can be. The tightness of the weave matters more. The tighter they are, the less light can pass through them. When you are dealing with fabric, there’s no weave tight enough to block out every bit of light. However, room-darkening fabrics can block up to 99% of light.
