Discover the Softer Side of Vertical Blinds

Say “vertical blinds,” and visions of cheap plastic blinds with annoying, clacking slats might come to mind. But thanks to modern design and state-of-the-art operating systems, present-day vertical blinds are softer and more elegant than their predecessors, though no less effective as window coverings.

When the Bopp brothers invented vertical blinds in 1950, it was a contemporary design response to traditional horizontal blinds (also known as Venetian blinds). Their invention utilized the same operational methodology as traditional blinds, but with a fresh aesthetic that was especially suited for large windows and doors. Vertical blinds open side to side, unlike Venetian blinds that open by going up and down. So, the side-to-side maneuverability made vertical blinds ideal for doors (or windows) that also open side to side. The popularity of vertical blinds then spread throughout America, especially in the growing suburbs where they were often seen over patio doors leading to little green yards surrounded by white picket fences. Fast forward to 2021, and we're seeing another design revolution for blinds as soft-touch vertical blinds are taking over the market.

Traditional blinds, horizontal and vertical, are considered hard window treatments. The firm slats, clean lines, and smooth minimalistic aesthetic holding true for all styles. But sometimes, though we may want the functionality of hard blinds (which provide privacy, insulation, and view-through light-control) we may crave a different style of window treatment; one that is softer, more inviting, and cozier than traditional, hard vertical blinds. If that is the case, say hello to the soft-touch vertical blinds from Hunter Douglas.

Besides traditional vertical blinds, and top of the line wood and aluminum horizontal blinds, Hunter Douglas developed two styles of vertical blinds (Cadence® Soft Vertical Blinds and Skyline® Gliding Window Panels) that have the utility of traditional vertical blinds but are constructed from soft textiles to give the window treatment a whole new look and feel.

Cadence® Soft Vertical Blinds

Cadence® Soft Vertical Blinds are the elegant unison of drapery and vertical blinds. The slats are sculpted vanes of fabric that can be maneuvered. They operate like vertical blinds but look like drapery, and the combination produces a window treatment with enhanced sound and light control. Because Cadence® Soft Vertical Blinds are great for sound and light absorption and because of the warm, cozy mood they set in a space, it’s popular to utilize Cadence® Soft Vertical Blinds in bedrooms and more intimate spaces in the home.

Skyline® Gliding Window Panels

This one-of-a-kind vertical blind uses slats inserted into fabric, but those slats are spaced farther apart creating the overall appearance of panels rather than individual hanging slats. This design really highlights the fabric that is used, and they are great for wide windows. The broad panes of fabric in Skyline® Gliding Window Panels also work well as room dividers.
